Vacuum Packaging Machinery – What is it about?
Vacuum packaging is a professional skill of packaging, which removes air from the pouches prior to sealing. The method involves placing items in dedicated packages, removing the air from the inside fully, sealing the packs done.
Vacuum packaging with nitrogen purge involves placing products in packs, removing the air from the inside completely by vacuuming, and injecting the packaging with non-toxic, nitrogen gas before sealing the packages done.
The chapter of the skill called vacuum packaging has been developing since 20th century. In 1950, mylar and polyethylene started being used for making vacuum packaging films. Therefore, the future of vacuum packaging industry has been unstoppable for development.
Vacuum packaging had started being practiced since 1980s, and the skill for vacuum packaging with nitrogen purge were not popular enough to apply after 1990s. By the evolution of marketing strategies for packages, vacuum packaging with nitrogen purge started being applied for a variety of used. Some of the vacuum packages with nitrogen purge has taken the place of original packs made by normal ones. The nitrogen purge will be potentially key for the new vision in vacuum packaging industry.
Vacuum origins from a word named ‘vacuo’ in Latin, which means “nothingness”. Vacuum also indicates a place with thin air. What air exerts less pressure than air at a lower altitude is called ‘Vacuum’.
How thin the air is in vacuumed state is viewed as ‘degree of vacuum’, which is showed as “Pa”. Vacuum packaging does not mean what it means in written – Fully vacuumed. The Pa of degrees of vacuum runs between 600-1333. Vacuum packaging is precisely known as decompressed packaging or removing-air packaging.
The features of vacuum packaging:
- Remove part of oxygen out of the containers for food preservation.
- Apply air-tight packages and elaborate sealing method to avoid quality effects and pollution.
- The conduction works effectively to get antimicrobial and to prevent the explosion of containers whose air getting decompression by the method of vacuum packaging.
In food industry, vacuum packaging has been frequently applied in cooked cuisine, pickled food, dried fruit, etc. Food being vacuumed extends its own self life.
Vacuum Packaging Machinery – How does it work?
The main physical principle of the vacuum packaging is to remove the oxygen for food preservation. Why food spoilage occurs is caused by the existence of microorganisms, which live with oxygen. Taking advantage of removing oxygen from the packages is the key to achieve self-life extending on the preservation.
According to the experiment, growth and reproduction of microorganisms gets much more slowly than they do normally when the amount of oxygen drops down to 1 percent. While the amount of oxygen exists only for 0.5 percent, the majority of microorganisms stops growing and reproducing. It is impossible to avoid quality effects by vacuum packaging merely. The way to prevent all the negative effects is to get the skill of vacuum packaging combined with a series of another methods such as cold storage, flash freezing, dehydration, and so on.
Oxygen-removing vacuum method also has food get away of oxidization. Most of fat foods contains Saturated fatty acid, which is easily oxidized by oxygen to make foods spoil. Oxidization gets the loss of vitamin A and vitamin C. Some food contains pigments whose substances darkening with oxidization. That is why vacuum packing becomes essential for preservation.
Vacuum packaging with nitrogen purge not only keeps basic function, but also possesses pressure-resistance, air-tight feature, freshness keeping, etc. Vacuum packaging with purge becomes much more effective for food preservation.
Besides, some kinds of food are merely fit to be applied in vacuum packaging with nitrogen purge. To take crispy food for example, the food won’t be easily crushed during the process of physical impacts. The shaped food might be possible to pierce out of the packages. Vacuum packaging with nitrogen purge works appropriately for keeping the looks of specific food.
Speaking of vacuum packaging with nitrogen purge, the specific air will be injected into the packages after the items get vacuumed. Nitrogen is one of noble gas, so nitrogen flushing keeps the air inside the pouches stable for air-tight protection.
Carbon dioxide makes weakly acidic carbonic acid while staying in fats and liquid. The benefit of flushing carbon dioxide is to terminate growth and reproduction. By using oxygen, it runs for anti-anaerobic bacteria, food freshness, and color keeping. Heavy oxygen makes meat colors stay fresh.
- Plug the cable to get powered.
Switch the button to turn on the machine.
The button lights up while power of the machine turns up.
If ‘VACUUM’ lights up, it runs for “vacuum packaging”.
If ‘GAS’ lights up, it runs for “vacuum packaging with gas purge”. - Put stuffed pouches in the chamber of the vacuum packaging machine.
The opening tops of the pouches are placed on heating strips tidily.
It’s a must to put least one of the flushing kits in the packs if it comes to producing air-flushing packages. - Close the lid after placing stuffed packs.
If ‘VACUUM’ on the panel runs up, the pump will start removing the air in the chamber and the lip will get suction with the body automatically before the machine makes the process of packaging done.
Vacuum degree is available to be set for different uses.
The hand of the vacuum pressure gauge has to move from the low to the high slowly. - ‘VACUUM’ ends, as long as the vacuum degree meets the demand, which is taken as the timer of “The Seconds Displays”. When the process of ‘VACUUM’ is done, ‘VACUUM’ lights off.
As soon as ‘GAS’ lights up, the machine starts vacuum packaging with gas purge. Gas amounts are available to be set, and the way of setting gas amounts are as same as how the adjustment of vacuum pressure gauge does.
Switch to ‘VACUUM’ if it is not necessary to do gas purge for packaging, and therefore the machine will start vacuuming the packages while “GAS” lights off. - ‘SEAL’ lights up for running the process of sealing when ‘VACUUM’ and “GAS” finish and the lights of two modes turn off.
There is a timer of heating for sealing (temperatures) to apply with a variety of pouches made from different materials.
The hand of the timer has to move slowly in case the temperatures rise rapidly to burn the kits for heating and sealing. - ‘SEAL’ ends, as long as the timer finishes. When the process of ‘SEAL’ is done, “SEAL” lights off. After finishing ‘SEAL’, the lid will automatically open up to touch the air out of the chamber run by the solenoid valve.
In summary, this is the way how the machines operate for vacuum packaging.
The warranties of all new machines manufactured by JIA SHENG (Exceed vac) are a year.
Please note that the warranties do not cover any human errors and consumables, such as heating wires, heat resistance tapes, vacuum pump machine oil, silicone strips on sealing bars, and silicone strips in the top lids.According to the maintenance/oil changes intervals of general vacuum packaging machines, it is suggested that oil changes should be executed once half a year. If the vacuum packaging machines are mainly for used to pack products with liquid, it is suggested that oil changes should be performed once three or four months.
Please note that parts of the machines might be damaged if the intervals of maintenance/changes are not executed regularly.
There is no specific regulation of consumable changes. The interval of changes for consumables is based on the used frequency and usage functioned by users. More frequent to perform the machine, more common to change the consumables, and vice versa.It is mandatory to perform the interval of maintenance/oil changes regardless of the used frequency of the machines.
It is advised that the machines should be functioned at least once a week to prolong the lifespan of the vacuum pumps and to lubricate them with vacuum pump oil, which are available to prolong the interval of maintenance/oil changes, but the interval should not be performed after one year.JIA SHENG sells vacuum pump oil and all the consumables. Feel free to contact the representative for all your needs!
Please be aware of that it is required to apply specific vacuum pump oil according to your types of vacuum pumps in in case of any damage of the parts.- Please check if there is any crack and split in/on the pouches. The crack/spilt will cause the defective rate of vacuum degrees.
- Please check that the opening of the pouch is folded or sticked with any foreign objects or liquids. There might be a failure of standard vacuum degrees if the pouch does not get sealed well.
- Please check the timer of the panel to see if the period suits the products or not. Inappropriate period will cause the defect of vacuum packaging.
- Please check if the pouches are piled with one another pouches. The way of packaging will make the failure of sealing to lower the vacuum degrees.

If there is any need of pouches, feel free to contact the representative for more service.It is not advised to pack any liquid before cooling down the liquid, as the changes of air pressure during the vacuum process will cause visual boiling effect. The liquid with high temperature will run out of the pouch much easier, which will cause the failure of packaging and the damage in the machines.
Please cool down all the liquid before the products are about to be packaged. In addition, please only put liquid up the 60%-70% of capacity of pouches in case of liquid overflow with visual boiling effect.
It is suggested to install a filter on vacuum packaging machines which are mainly for packaging liquid to prevent machines from invasion of any foreign objects or liquid during the vacuum process.
